 To become a Qualified Director of Safety (QDS), applicants must meet certain educational requirements. 


Applicants must have at least a Master'sdegree in science, emergency management, or safety from a regionally-accredited college or university or from another college that is recognized by the EPS Institute, or 180 college units with a minimum of 60 semester course hours of science, safety, or other related fields.


Exceptions are reviewed on a case by case basis.

 Applicants for the QDS designation typically need 10 plus years of relevant experience or combined experience in the field of land/maritime safety, emergency management, or environmental remediation and compliance. This professional-level experience should encompass a broad scope of practices and may include areas such as consulting, compliance, auditing, public health, public safety, wastewater, vegetation management, and more.

  

Involvement in at least 3 disasters (minimum state level declared emergencies) at a supervisory/management level such as:

Site Safety and Health Officer

ICS Safety Officer

Task Force Lead

Project Manager or similar*

ESF Team


The experience should demonstrate a deep understanding of various processes and the ability to identify and address health and safety hazards involving humans and the environment.


Ethics course

This course has the following learning objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how the various Codes of Ethics apply to EHS practice
  • Learn how professional Codes of Ethics requirements relate to ethical decision-making
  • Explore how to utilize various commonly-accepted approaches for resolving ethical issues
  • Practice using ethical principles to assess case study scenarios using the various resolution approaches discussed in the course materials
  • Learn what steps can be taken to avoid future ethical dilemmas

When applying for a credential, it is important to provide five letters of recommendation. Letters should be from an industry peer, one from a current or former professor who can speak to your academic prowess or similar.


The letters should provide insight into your skills, knowledge, and experience in the field of safety management.

  • Basic OSHA 30 Health and safety regulations
  • Occupational disease (Bloodborne pathogens, COVID, etc.)
  • USACE EM-385-1-1 Health and safety regulations
  • Basic sciences (mechanical, electrical, organic chemistry)
  • Hurricane, tornado, wildfire, environmental, hot/cold weather health, and safety hazards
  • ICS/NIMS
  • Levels A, B, C, D PPE
  • Basic air monitoring
  • Basic first aid, CPR, & AED best practices and techniques
  • Working on the water, basic vessel safety
  • Confined space entry and basic rescue
  • Respiratory protection
  • Hot work & fire prevention
  • Chainsaw safety
  • Basic heavy equipment safety

  • Radiological Awareness from NNSA CTOS
  • HAZWOPER  40 and Supervisor
  • CPR/First Aid

· Published author in a recorded medium or complete an approved White Paper

  • Peer Reviewed Articles
  • State or Federal Approved Curriculum 
  • Books related to the field of safety.

Up to 2 additional retests are allowed. If an applicant fails the exam and both retests, they are disqualified from retesting and must wait 2 years before reapplying as a new applicant.
