To become a Certified Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional (CIHSP), applicants must meet certain educational requirements.
Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering from a regionally-accredited college or university or from another college that is recognized by the EPS Institute, or 150 college units with a minimum of 60 semester course hours of science, math, engineering, or other related fields.
Exceptions are reviewed on a case by case basis.
Applicants for the CIHSP designation typically need to have at least four years of relevant work experience in the field of safety and industrial hygiene. This professional-level experience should encompass a broad scope of industrial hygiene practices and may include areas such as consulting, electronics, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, public health, wastewater, healthcare, academia, and more.
The experience should demonstrate a deep understanding of various processes and the ability to identify and address health and safety hazards.

When applying for a credential, it is important to provide three letters of recommendation. One letter should be from an industry peer, one from a current or former professor who can speak to your academic prowess, and one from a certified safety manager or similar.
The letters should provide insight into your skills, knowledge, and experience in the field of safety management.

Up to 2 additional retests are allowed. If an applicant fails the exam and both retests, they are disqualified from retesting and must wait 2 years before reapplying as a new applicant.
